Lighting Research

One of our designers, Eleonore, did some in-depth and thoughtful research into the lighting we will use on our exhibit. As a team, we understood the importance of lighting and its effect on the ambiance of the exhibit. Shown below are the three design's suggested to the team:

Lighting Bulbs:

• To hang from the tree 'like vines'.

Light Tubes:

• Fixed to the ceiling above the exhibition boards.

Light Strips:

• Attached within the structure of the exhibition.

We chose LED lighting as we felt this would be the most energy-efficient source of light. Their energy consumption levels are extremely low yet they reach their full brightness instantly. Research shows that in some fittings, LED's only used 1/10 of the electricity used in halogen bulbs. Shown below is a graph taken from https://www.cse.org.uk/advice/advice-and-support/lighting where they compare the three types of bulbs over 1000 hours per year. It can be seen that although LEDs are more expensive to buy, they last the longest (by far) and are the cheapest to run.

Eleonore also did some research comparing where each light can be sourced, sponsored from, and their costs, which she presented clearly in a chart shown below. 

In our team meeting on 7th May, we decided on design 1, the lighting bulbs, which we will source from Portsmouth's Hotwall's Studios. This will support local businesses as well as reduce the carbon footprint of our design. 

Lastly, we considered what we can do with our lighting after the exhibition, as it is only for 5 days. There is the option of reusing and reselling. 

• Recolight is a shop in Portsmouth that collects lights to recycle. 
• We could donate our lights to The British Heart Foundation.
• The Lamp Company comes and collects the lights to reuse them.
